City Celebrations Programme Christmas and New Year, 1955-56

The following resume of events to celebrate Gisborne's accession to city status has been supplied by the Gisborne City Council:

  • December 25: Combined Religious Service, Regent Theatre, 8 p.m. Sponsored by Gisborne Ministers' Association.
  • December 26 to 31: Beach Carnival, Waikanae Beach. Sponsored by Waikanae Christmas Carnival Committee.
  • December 26 and 27: Motor Cycle Championships, A. & P. Showgrounds. Sponsored by Gisborne Motor Cycle Club.
  • December 26 to 29: P. B. and E.C. Lawn Tennis Championships, Victoria Domain, Childers Road.
  • December 27 to January 7: Children's Services and Beach Games, Waikanae Beach. Sponsored by Children's Seaside Service Association.
  • December 31: Combined Surf Clubs Carnival, Waikanae Beach, commencing at 2 p.m.
  • December 31 and January 3: Bowling Tournament for Peace Shield. Sponsored by Gisborne-East Coast Bowling Centre.
  • January 2: Te Karaka Sports at A. & P. Showgrounds, commencing at 10 a.m. Sponsored by Te Karaka Sports Club.
  • January 3: Procession of Decorated Floats from Post Office to Childers Road Reserve. GYMKHANA at Reserve.
  • January 3: Reading Of Proclamation by Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs, declaring Gisborne to be a city. At 8 p.m. in Opera House, to be followed by Official Concert.
  • January 7 and 8: Cricket Match. Poverty Bay v. Hutt Valley, at Oval. Sponsored by P.B. Cricket Association.
  • January 7: Athletic Carnival, Childers Road Reserve.
  • January 9 to 13: New Zealand Archery Championships, Childers Road Reserve.
  • January 11 and 12: Maori Concert, Opera House.
  • January 13 and 14: Inter-provincial Junior Tennis Championships.
  • January 14: Marching Contest, Childers Road Reserve, commencing 1.30 p.m.
  • January 14: Combined Swimming Carnival, Macrae Baths, commencing 7.30 p.m.
  • January 15: Surf Club Carnival, Waikanae Beach, commencing 2 p.m. Visiting teams from Hawke's Bay and Bay of Plenty.
  • January 16 to 21: N.Z. Junior Tennis Championships, Victoria Domain.
