The first of two bulk cement silos was officially opened and put into operation recently. New Zealand Cement Holdings' bulk silo, situated near the overseas wharf, was loaded with Milburn cement from the company's ship the "Guardian Carrier". A short ceremony marked the inaugural operation.

Pictured in front of the silo are, from left: Messrs D. E. Chrisp (harbour board chairman), L. McNamara (plant manager), D. M. Wilson (general manager N.Z. Cement Holdings), and B. H. Ames (company director).

This shot from the top of the silo, 85 feet up, shows connection of ship to silo. Cement is carried to top of silo by a strong current of air. Giant hose is connected to underground pipe at ship's side (arrow 1). This pipe emerges below silo (arrow 2) and rises to top of silo (arrow 3) where cement falls into storage.
