The legend on the back of the plate.

With the approval of His Worship the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Gisborne this plate has been created as one of two thousand only, to commemorate the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the landing of Captain James Cook at Turanga (Gisborne) on the 9th October 1769.

The president of the Lions Club, Mr H. W. Wale, is shown with an advance sample of the Cook Bicentenary plate--only 2,000 will be produced--as a commemorative piece. The plate depicts the city Coat 6f Arms in colour, with a legend on the reverse side, and is suitably boxed in a two colour presentation box. The project has the approval of the City Council and sales of the plates will help to provide funds for Young Nick's playground, a Lions Club project. Produced in New Zealand under the direction of Mr Wale (a council member of the Heraldry Society and a member of the committee which designed the City Coat of Arms) the plates will be delivered at the end of June. Substantial numbers have been ordered in advance but orders may still be placed with members of the Lions Club, or several local firms.
