Unusual Architecture

One of Gisborne's more remarkable buildings is the Kaiti residence of Mr and Mrs J. H. R. Egan, at the end of Hinaki Street, fronting the Waimata River. Familiarly known to local residents as "Barker's Castle", after the late Mr Vincent Barker, who built it early in this century, the building is a landmark in that part of the city.

Set as it is in beautiful grounds, with trim lawns studded with standard roses, flower plots, and ornamental shrubs, the building is a most impressive sight. Every effort has been made in its construction to match in wood the likeness of a stone castle, with its crenellated battlements, slot windows in the towers, and superimposed cornerstones.
