The Chinese community in Gisborne celebrated their national day recently. As far as the community at large was concerned the only outward sign was that most of the city's fruit shops were closed for the day, but in the Chinese Association's rooms there was entertainment and pageantry in plenty.

In the evening, all assembled at the Makaraka Hall, when a repast which might not have appealed to European appetites was demolished in quick time with chopsticks. The courses were many and varied.
