Past & Present

It's a long way back to the days when this picture was taken of Gisborne Post Office, with the clock tower intact, and the old wooden, building next door.

Decipherable signs in distance and on the public carriages drawn up in front of the post office read Jas. J. Niven, Engineers ; Hannahs for Footwear, Bloore for Properties, and Primrose and Leslie for Saddlery.

Tower was removed after it was rendered unsafe by the "Napier" earthquake, and the clock was re-erected in new tower (right) in Midway, as monument to long-time town clerk, the late Mr R. D. B. Robinson.
