Guy Fawkes right in Gisborne this year wore a different character in that there was no organised display at Waikanae Beach. The Jaycees, finding that public financial support for the excellent displays of earlier years did not match the expenditure, are diverting their energies into other channels this year. If less spectacular, the night was still full of interest, eye-dazzling display — and noise. At Mangapapa, there was an organised bonfire and entertainment in the reserve, while at Waikanae, the beach was lit by a series of fires extending for miles round the bay.
