Outstanding Achievement

An outstanding achievement was recorded by the Waikanae senior life saving team when they annexed the premier trophy, the Nelson Shield, for the fourth year in succession at the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships. These were held at Midway Beach over three days. Hundreds of competitors and spectators took part in the proceedings.

Notable Retirement

After 21 years as a member of the life saving fraternity and the past 14 years as Waikanae club captain, Barry McLean has announced his retirement from serious competition.

A notable figure on the New Zealand Surf Life Saving scene, Barry, and his father, Mr Jack McLean, both became members of the newly-formed 21 Club. Members of clubs who have given 21 years' service to surf life saving are eligible to join.
