Surf City Rodders

With six hot rods under construction and a steady increase in membership, the Gisborne Hot Rod Club has a sound future. Plans lor 1969 are to hold hill climbs, gymkhanas and drag races. The club also hopes to obtain a permanent drag strip and club house.

Built and owned by Burnie Hopps of 22 Dominion Road is this Austin based hot rod. It has a 1929 Austin chassis with a rebuilt body, Zephyr wheels at the rear and Viva wheels in front, and is powered by a 1934-36 Austin motor with 60 thou. oversize valves.

Pictured with his brother's hot rod is Graeme Jenkins of 9 Abbott Street. The hot rod is a 1934 V8 pickup truck powered by a high compression 1948 V8 motor with a ¾ racing cam, twin carburettors and manifold.

Working on the motor for his hot rod is Ron Hall of 225 Crawford Road. The 1948 Mercury motor with ¾ racing cam, triple Strongburge carburettors, ⅛ oversized alloyed racing pistons, lightened and balanced flywheel, 7.5-1 compression head and transistorized ignition will power a 1934 V8 pickup truck.

Built and owned by John Birrell (339 Childers Road) is this converted Essex Saloon. The hot rod has a 1937 V8 chassis and is powered by a reconditioned 1939 Mercury motor. Total cost so far has been $400. Pictured in the insert is John with his wife Tingi (who has assisted in the building), and his son Thomas.
