Cycling Champs

The Watties 100-mile North Island cycling championship and the Napier to Gisborne road race were held over Labour weekend. Strong and blustery westerly winds made conditions unpleasant for the riders on all three days of the races

Finishing fifth and sixth were Gary Croskery and Ray Brown.

Bruce Biddie of Auckland's Northern Club won the 50-mile prime during the 100 miler.

Neville McKay won the second stage of the Napier to Gisborne race by a wide margin.
