Open For Business

The new Gisborne Police Station was officially opened on Wednesday, October 23, by the Minister of Police, Mr P. C. Allen. Included in the official party were Mrs Esme Tombleson, M.P. , the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs H. H. Barker, the Commissioner of Police, Mr C. G. Urquhart, and Mrs Urquhart, and Chief Inspector C. J. Bell and Mrs Bell.

Sgt. D. V. Jones and Constables J. M. Maggs, F. B. Champion, T. R. Crosby, A. R. Brace, B. C. Mead and H. A. Harvey were some of the Force members at the ceremony.

Among those attending the opening were Inspector P. T. Goodyear (left), who was sworn in at the old Police Station in 1952. He is now in Research and Planning, Wellington.

Constables I. E. Carmichael and K. K. Tibble are now both in Wellington, Constable Tibble comes from a very well known East Coast family while Constable Carmichael joined the Force three years ago in Gisborne.

Mr A. L. Butterworth was policeman at Motu in 1912. He is talking to Sgt. B. C. Attewell who joined the Police in Gisborne in 1957.

Mr and Mrs E. A. Forrest. Mr Forrest's company built the new Police Station.

Mr R. Patterson, constable at Makaraka, and Mr Bert Bradley, who was many years at Ruatoria and Tolaga Bay.

Constable and Mrs K. D. McLeod. Constable McLeod retired a few days before the new station was opened.

Superintendent R. A. Moore, formerly of Gisborne and now at New Plymouth, Mr J Birch, who was in the Force in 1927 in Gisborne and who also spent eight years at Ruatoria, and Sgt N. T. Dobson, now at Ruatoria. In front is young Russell Dobson.

Mr and Mrs R. G. Smart. Mr Smart was a policeman at Gisborne in 1913 and was the first single man to live in the old barracks.
