Learning Young

The rules of the road are now taught from a very tender age. Instruction starts at kindergarten and goes through all school levels and continues on through university. Even after that we are all still learning.

This early education is very necessary these days as the roads are no longer places to dawdle on, let alone take risks with one's life.

This does not mean to say that the motorist has no responsibilities - such as that of slowing down while anywhere near a school, play-centre or kindergarten. All places of education do not finish instruction at 3.15p.m. and young people are likely to pop out of school gates any time after two o'clock.

Traffic Officer L. N. Hutchison is the Schools' Traffic Instruction Officer for Gisborne and the East Coast and he spends considerable time and patience educating young people in the rules of the road. It is to be hoped that they carry on with his good work and are not led astray later in life by some of the adult pedestrians who at times should show much more road sense and awareness.

These pictures were taken at the Riverdale Kindergarten and (below) Traffic Officer Hutchison gives the children a lesson in road safety theory.

Look right, look left, look right again, check, then cross the road smartly. Mr Hutchison points out the basic facts to Mandy Sadler (left) and Debbie White.

Also receiving directions in road crossing are Tracey Bai and Christene Bolton.
