The Past Recalled

With the National Basketball Championships being held in Gisborne last month, and the harriers' 21st birthday before that, now is an appropriate time to publish these two pictures.

From Mrs L. E. Latham, 32 White's Line, Lower Hutt, comes this picture of the Poverty Bay rep basketball team of 1938. This 30-year-old photo shows the then players from left, in front: Mrs Chrissie Corkery (manager), Meg Armstrong, Nell Millar, Betty Hislop, Rosa Nigro, Iris Somervell (coach), and, at back, Norma Henderson, Hazel McKnight, Olga Norberg, Rose Plowman, Rita O'Gorman, Mavis Bloxham and Tui Stevens. They are pictured with a cup which is a Rotorua Association trophy and was played for among "B" grade teams each year. Poverty Bay won it at least twice and shared it once up to 1938. Does anyone know if it is still played for? And what Is its name? It is a magnificent trophy. If any one does know they may like to get in touch with Mrs Latham at the above address.

The 21st birthday celebrations of the present Harrier Club brought to mind this photo belonging to Les Barker of Norman Road. It shows members of an earlier club in Gisborne and this photo was taken in 1935. This was towards the end of the depression years when their funds were at a low level. The club used to have Saturday afternoon runs from various members' houses and finish up with a good afternoon tea. "Not much money", says Mr Barker, "but plenty of fun in those days".
In the picture, which was taken outside 22 Norman Road, are, from left to right, at back, Alf Ingram (starter), Tom Kent (handicapper), Bill Bound, Charlie Halliwell, Ern Halliwell, Fred Phillips, Mr C. E. Brown (patron), Tom Leslie (competitor), Mr T. R. Gordon (a well known jeweller who was timekeeper), and, in front, Leo Morrow, Len Slade, Ian Snadden (Hastings), Les Barker and Geoff Bloore.
