Where Are They Now?

From Tim Barns-Graham come these two pictures of life at Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. Tim is with the Department of Civil Aviation up there, and was formerly of Wainui Beach.

Two ex-Gisborne girls who are now employed by the Lower Hutt City Corporation as Traffic Officers are Mrs Whanua Dorset, left, and Mrs Sonya MacCauley. They were required to do a threemonth course as motor car drivers prior to doing a year's training with the Traffic Department School. Sonya is the daughter of Mr and Mrs V. L. Blumfield, 180 Derby Street. She is an Old Girl of the Girls' High School, and before leaving Gisborne was a Girls' Youth Leader at the Y.M.C.A.

From Pani Pera in Brisbane comes this picture of, from left, Brian Lochore, John Smith, Pani Pera and Duncan Ross. John and Pani are members of the New Zealand Branch of the Polynesian Association in Brisbane and were on hand to greet All Black Captain Lochore and manager Ross when the All Blacks arrived in Brisbane on June 16 last. John Smith is originally from Te Reinga but was better known to his associates as Jack Poutawa. He spent six years (from 1959-65) in the Army then went to Australia in 1966 where he is at present employed by the Brisbane City Council. Pani is originally from Puha and in late 1963 went to Wellington, going on to Australia in 1965. After spending two years in Sydney he has spent the past year in Brisbane.

Tim is Station Technical Officer and is shown attending to Aitutaki Airport's radio installations. He writes: "Shortly due to handle Cook Islands' air traffic during the reconstruction of Rarotonga Airport next year, Aitutaki could become the tourist mecca of the Cook Islands with its beautiful scenery, coral lagoon and excellent fishing."

Aitutaki's Resident Agent is Jock McCauley and he is pictured here with the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Norman Kirk, during a parliamentary visit made to the Islands late last year. Jock served with the Department of Maori Affairs in Gisborne, prior to going to Wanganui, Penrhyn and Atiu as Resident Agent before taking up his present position at Aitutaki.
