Gisborne, always a long way from anywhere, was very much a world in itself in 1875. Big event for pioneer settlers was an annual picnic. This one, in the waimata that year, presents an interesting glimpse of the fashions of the time. Picnic was in November, which would occasion today's lightlyclad holiday-makers to wonder how grandma and grandpa stood the heat in all those clothes.
