This picture shows the first bathhouse ever built at the Morere Hot Springs. It was erected some time in the early 1890s but was demolished by a land-slide and flood waters before the beginning of the century. Many Gisborne people really got carried away and would ride the 42 miles to the springs to enjoy the refreshing waters.

From Mr Jim Mountford of 32 Salisbury Road come these three pictures of the Poverty Bay floods of May 14, 1948, which this year makes the twentieth anniversary of the same. The pictures show (left) a view of water-inundated properties in Parker's Lane at Makaraka, (below left) a truck forging through the flood waters, and (below right) looking towards the racecourse which was also under water.
