Grandstand Opened

The new grandstand at the Harry Barker Reserve was opened on Saturday, April 20. The occasion was also the opening of the hockey season and the official party, the public, and hockey teams present were entertained by members of the ladies' teams who performed action songs. The grounds, of course, are now a permanent venue for hockey and cricket.

Speakers were Messrs Tom Thorp, patron of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association, Keith Hughes, president, Tom Smiler snr., on behalf of the Maori people, and Mayor Harry Barker who declared the grandstand open.

The hockey season was started by an all day tournament for the Watties' cups. Mrs Dee Tureia (left) and Moana Kingston, captains of Y.M.P. A and B respectively, which won their sections.
