A.F.S. News

What must be almost a record is the acceptance of all four nominations put forward by the American Field Scholar committee for four scholars to go to the U.S.A. for the 1968-69 year.

They are above, from left, Noel Hobbs of Waikohu College, Helen Shanks of the Girls' High School, Anne Poulgrain of Lytton High School and Amanda Shaw, also of the Lytton High School.

They leave for the U.S.A. in July, before when they will be informed to which part of the States they will be going.

Meanwhile, from these three students already over there at the moment there is news.

John Hickling (right) is attending high school at the Adlai Stevenson Memorial High School at Deerfield, Chicago, a recently opened high school in that city.

John is shown in high school football gear and during the football season played "fullback on offense" and "end on defense".

Elizabeth Burdett (below left) who is at Westfield High, 20 miles from New York, is pictured with Felix Fridman, an A.F.S. from Paraguay, on a visit to the famous West Point Military Academy, where they are both seen wearing West Point cadet caps. Elizabeth recently had a week's ski trip to Vermont with 90 members of her school, a trip to Princeton University, and has had several trips to New York City which included visits to museums, a flower show at the Coliseum, and the Puerto Rican market which is very similar to Covent Garden.

Patricia Hall (below right) is shown with Robin Yaxley, her "sister" with whose family she is staying at 14403 Savannah Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. Pat has been on various weekend trips into beautiful Ohio state, camping out with the family a number of times, as well as being very busy with her High School studies.

On the local scene a "welcome to Gisborne" buffet dinner was held to introduce Jerry Beltz from Watertown, Wisconsin, to members of the student chapter in the city. He is staying with the Russell family, Mill Road.
