Two of Hauiti's former top rugby players are Pomare Kutia and Julian Thompson. Pomare toured with the Maori All Blacks to Fiji in his young days and played in many big games on the Coast. He was also in the first Tolaga team to win the Wharekura cup. His cousin Julian was a member of the Te Aute First XV in 1927, in which year he also won the senior athletic championship

The late Weti Thompson, one of the leading riders when cycling was a known sport on the coast. He is pictured riding Alan Sutton's "Speed King" an original racing bike created in Gisborne.

Only two of their kind in New Zealand are these English style hotels.
