Help For the Crippled

Gary Williams, 8, attends the Tokomaru Bay primary school - but only because of the existence of the Gisborne and East Coast Crippled Children Society. You see, the boy is a spastic and the society, by providing an electric typewriter, has enabled Gary to stay at home and attend school locally. Unable to write longhand, Gary has become very adept at using the machine which has a keyhole board, enabling him to touch each key separately. If it were not for the society, Gary, to obtain an education, would have had to leave home.

It is for reasons such as this that the society seeks to raise funds to help people like Gary and other crippled children.

One such scheme was the recently held series of "vanishing morning teas" and the six originators, Mesdames W. Muirhead, J. Hawkesworth, R. Cox (left) and G. Bremner, O. Hale and G. Fox (below) are shown counting the proceeds of the series, which came to well over $400.oo. A fine effort, but the society can always do with more funds as equipment (such as the typewriter) does not come cheaply. Donations are always acceptable!
