Here and There

After over 40 years of service, the old grandstand at the Oval has been demolished. While the stand could still have coped with a full load of rugby spectators, there was doubt that it would have survived the enthusiasm associated with that winning try. The job of demolition was appropriately enough in the hands of Bill Carrington, former Maori All Black, who had played in front of, and watched many gases from, the old stand.

Lifted into place by one of Monk's cranes, the 40ft two-section chimney was erected without incident.

First stage is the removal of the roofing iron.

The last stage is the hauling down or the last remaining section of the rear wall of the stand by Bill Carrington and Fraser King.

A new chimney was put into place over the boilerhouse at the Kia Ora butter factory at Makaraka recently.
