Early Harbour Development

Pictures from the Past

With Gisborne Harbour development very much in the news these days it is perhaps appropriate to look back to the 1920's when the original port development project was underway.

This picture, taken in 1924 from the spot now occupied by the Watersiders Canteen, shows the old bucket dredge cutting its way into the area which was to become the inner basin. In the right foreground are rows of reinforced concrete piles, one of which is being driven on the far side of the proposed basin (centre rear of picture).

A large crane was utilised to construct the breakwater with blocks of concrete.

Some of the men employed on the project were Messrs Stewart, Gordon, Bonniface, J. Wright, Winter, Taylor, P. Menzies, and A. Petherbridge.

Boarding the larger vessels in the roadstead was facilitated by a basket suspended from a winch rope. (Pictures from Mr A. Petherbridge, of Auckland).
