It was a big day for the P.B. highway and river control authorities when the new Matawhero bridge was officially opened by the then Minister of Works, Mr W. S. Goosman. Two-and-a-half years in the making, the bridge was a vital part of the Waipaoa River flood control scheme, which involved the diverting of the river through a "cut" to the south of the bridge, eliminating a large and flood-prone loop in its course.

The annual Freyberg Golf tourney was a big draw at the P.B. links in 1957. Pictured is a youthful Bob Charles, then N.Z. amateur champion, who led his Canterbury team to victory. Watching him is N.Z. representative John Durry.

1957 was a year of bridge building in the city, and the Lyttou Road bridge was progressing well to link the western suburbs across the Taruheru and relieve congestion caused by the closure of the old Roebuck Road bridge.

The Whangara Hotel, unlicensed and unoccupied, was burnt to the ground in May, 1962. Originally on the old coach road at the mouth of the Pakarae River, it was moved to its final site in 1920 when the inland road was opened.

The national Cherub championships, with 46 entrants, were sailed on Poverty Bay. A southerly buster which struck without warning during one of the races created havoc among the light craft and eliminated all but ten of them.
