A close-up picture of one of the honeycomb hatcheries. The empty cells have been vacated by grown wasps, and now contain eggs for a future generation. Adjacent to these on the right is the next stage in their life-cycle. These contain larvae or grubs which are later sealed inside by a white cap (remaining cells in picture), until the grown wasp emerges to commence its working life.
