Gisborne Girl'S Prominent Nursing Career

A former Gisborne girl who started her career of nursing as a member of the P.B. (Mounted) Nursing Division during the Second World War, is now matron of Alice Springs Hospital in Central Australia.

She is Dwillis Kemp, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Kemp, 18 Salisbury Road, who recently announced her engagement to Mr A. R. M. Williamson, of Ivanhoe, New South Wales.

The Mounted Division was a unique unit formed by Miss Winifred Lysnar consisting of capable < unclear >horsewo</ unclear > who were trained in nursing and first aid to be called upon in association with the local Independent Mounted Rifles in the event of a Japanese invasion.

As a member of the Division, Miss Kemp developed a keen interest and grounding in a career which was to take her to Japan for two years with the occupational forces after the war. She then returned to N.Z. for formal training at the Waikato Hospital, then to St. Helen's in Auckland, and later as assistant matron at the North Shore Hospital.

In 1956 she went to the Melbourne Olympics, and while in Australia, joined the Flying Doctor Service, serving as matron of Darwin, Katherine, and finally Alice Springs hospitals.
