Here and There
At a ceremony held in the Guide Hall, Palraerston Road, the Poverty Bay Divisional Guide Commissioner, Miss W. L. O'Halloran, presented Elizabeth (centre) and Jocelyn with their badges.
Born in Kaitaia and a grandson of Mr and Mrs James Dunlop (who were among the earliest settlers in Poverty Bay), Mr Smith came to the Coast at an early age and has continued a life-time interest in farming and racing. He has five children, one of whom, Mrs J. W. Bain, lives in Gisborne, 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The model, to be placed in a glass case in the office, is seen here with Public Relations Officer John Burland and the maker, Geoffrey Hutchins.
Another two Guides worthy of congratulations are Elizabeth Mathews and Jocelyn Prentice of the Aranga Company who have been awarded their Queen's Guide Badges.
Retiring after 26 years' service with D. J. Barry Ltd is Mr G. Wallace. At a function held recently, Mr E. T. Chrisp (left) made a presentation on behalf of the company to Mr Wallace.
Pictured cutting the cake on his 80th birthday is Mr W. A. Smith of 27 Ormond Road, a well known figure in Gisborne and on the Coast.
After spending 50 painstaking hours on the construction of thismodel of Captain Cook's ship "The Endeavour", Geoffrey Hutchins presented it to the Public Relations Office for display.
