"Poverty" Bay

Meet "Borax". He's a cute little fellow with a very fertile imagination and a humorous slant on life. You will see him from time to time in "Photo News", poking fun at the local community or having a sly dig at the local news.

"Borax" is tickled pink by Gisbornians' apparent over-sensitive attitude to the name of their district......popularly referred to as the "misnomer bestowed on the area by this country's British discoverer, Captain James Cook."

If the name Poverty Bay did in fact apply to the district, "Borax" reasons that the numerous industries of the city would be far from prosperous. So he decided to create this fun map, selected at random certain city industries, and pictured them as one might expect to find them in a place called "Poverty Bay".

As a footnote, "Borax" suggests that we adopt the attitude taken by the N. Z. B. C. , and restrict this "dreadful" name to the stretch of water between Tuahine Point and Young Nicks Head, and refer to the land area as the district of Gisborne.
