Sportsman Of The Month

John Guy, 32, of Wairere Road, Wainui, has captained the P. B. cricket team since his arrival in Gisborne in 1964.

A left-handed batsman of considerable international experience, Guy's leadership of the P. B. XI has probably contributed more than anything else to the improved performance of the team in the past season.

Born and bred in Nelson, Guy played for his college from his first year (a school record), and represented Nelson at 17. The next year he played for Central Districts, and in 1955, at 20, he toured India and Pakistan wIth the N. Z. team.

Next came a professional contract in England, foreshortened after one season by the illness of his mother, and then the N. Z. tour of South Africa in 1961-62.

Much travelled as a representative of the Shell Oil Coy, Guy has played for five N.Z. provinces. He has also represented his country against every major cricket country in the world.

Guy strikes out while on the way to making 102 against India. In a temperature of over 100 degrees, he lost nine pounds from this effort, and two stone during the whole tour.

In South Africa he had distinguished company in John Reid (captain) and Bert Sutcliffe. (From a team photo).

A souvenir miniature bat, autographed by the South African team, is a valued memento of tour.
