Outstanding Surf-Riding

Undoubtedly the star of the New Zealand Surf-riding championships held at Midway past the abattoirs was the Gisborne junior surfer Allan Byrne.

Winning every event he contested, this young champion was also awarded the Catalina Cup which goes to the most outstanding surfer at the championships.

Congratulations also go to Gail Patty of Gisborne who, after being three times placed, won the women's title.

The increasing popularity of the sport can be seen by the fact that over a thousand visitors came to the city for the events.
