Ten years past, the now defunct a and P Autumn Carnival was a highlight of the entertainment year. In '57, thousands gathered at the showgrounds to watch a multitude of first-class acts, including the daring ascent into the "stratosphere" by the "Red Shadow".

The raising of the rafters on the Chalet Rendezvous, at Wainui Beach, was an opportunity for the Swiss proprietors, Mr and Mrs C. Fankhauser, to observe a custom of their homeland by flying flags and nailing a small decorated tree to the highest point of the roof.

Highlight of the year for Gisborne cricketers was the match at the Oval against Ian Craig's Australian team. For the record the score was: Australia, 478 for nine (declared), P.B. 122 and 54 for five.

In March, 1962, Gisborne shearers Stewart Symond and Graham Baty (pictured) and wool handlers Graeme Boyd and Mrs Edwards won acclaim at the annual Golden Fleeco championships in Masterton when they won the premier event and a representative trip to Australia.

Gisborne's second Parade of Homes, in Turenne Street, attracted a great deal of interest. The 12 houses displayed ranged in price from £2750 to £3150. Pictured is the crowd gathered at the opening ceremony.
