Fourteen-year-old Jane Bird, who recently became the first Gisborne qualifier for the 1967 N.Z. Swimming Champs, smiles happily for our colour camera from the blue water of the McGlashen Pool, which over the past few months has become her second home. A dedicated free-style swimmer, Jane has covered almost 250 miles in training this season, or about 29 miles per week. Daughter of Mr and Mrs R. K. Bird, 109 Roebuck Road, Jane is a pupil of Lytton High School, is a member of the McGlashen Club, and is coached by Miss Beverly Davy.
