Sportsman Of The Month

Allan Byrne, 16-year-old son of Des and Jean Byrne, 111 Awapuni Road, culminated a short but already impressive surfing career when he finished fifth in the five mile paddle race at the World Surfing Championships held recently at Santiago, U.S.A.

For a young surfer up against stiff competition this was a great effort.

Formerly prominent in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay championship swimming events, Alan has concentrated more on surfing in the last three years.

Still going to school and sitting School Certificate this year, he is also a member of the Waikanae Surf Life Saving Club

The Catalina Cup donated by Lane, Walker, Rudkin was awarded for the first time this year for the most outstanding surfer at the N.Z. champs, and carries a superb and extensive surfing wardrobe. This firm sponsored Allan, and Wayne Parkes from Auckland, to the World Championships.
