Historic Poverty Bay NO. 2

The Turanganui Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Poverty Bay, being established in 1875. It was in the centre of things when Reads Quay was the shipping venue for Gisborne, and, if you had been around exactly 85 years ago today (our publication day) you would have been able to buy a copy of the Poverty Bay Standard dated Wednesday, 7th September, 1881, price 3d, and read the following advertisement:

"Turanganui Hotel. (S.de Costa, Proprietress). Replete with every convenience, the house being elaborately furnished, consisting of Commercial and Private sitting rooms. The Bedrooms are large and lofty, opening on to a spacious balcony, commanding a magnificent view of the Bay and surrounding country. (And if you were hungry)...An ordinary at 1 o'clock and table d'Hote at 6 o'clock daily."
