It Happened In Gisborne

Poverty Bay's famous All Black, lock forward Richard (Tiny) White, was given a hero's welcome home when he returned to Gisborne after playing in the 1956 test series against the touring Springboks. A crowd of 3000 packed the Peel Street-Gladstone Road intersection to greet their idol, and hear him announce his retirement from rugby with the then unequalled record of 23 consecutive test appearances.
