Healthy Citizens for the Future
With the new issue of health stamps in the offing perhaps we should give some thought to the function of health camps.
Built to provide the best facilities for the improvement of body, and out-look on life, the King George V Memorial Health Camp in Gisborne is typical of the camps in New Zealand.
Cleanliness, a balanced diet, fresh air and regular sleep are the primary factors in a stay in the camp. Children soon settle down and enjoy the life for their seven-week stay.
Buying health stamps helps finance these establishments.
Barney Amai, Lionel Stewart (back), Harry Rahana and Tarona Karua typify the spirit of the improving child.
Self-reliance and a sense of participation are encouraged through games, free play, organised walks and making their own beds as Bernice Washer is doing.
The daily diet includes fruit, cod liver oil and milk at specified intervals other than meal times. Carol Darrymple takes her afternoon milk from Kathy Matanga.

Schooling is not neglected and is conducted under the supervision of Mr G. Smythe. In the camp's own school-room, Mary Foote, Fay Moran, Adam McIntosh and Tarona Korua take a reading lesson.
