Misleading Signs

Sir,--I have been going to write to you for some months to protest against two signs erected in Ormond Road. One is on the corner of Fitzherbert Street, and the other is on the corner of Stafford Street. These signs read "Youth Hostel", and apparently direct people to the Waiteata Maori Boys' Hostel in Russell Street. I have a high regard for anything the Salvation Army does, but I do consider these signs misleading, as anyone following them would expect to be directed to the hostel of the Youth Hostel Association, which as you know is in Salisbury Road.--Fair's Fair.

A Pat On The Back

Sir,--It is beyond my comprehension that anybody could be so unthinking and irresponsible as to deliberately smash the windows of the fine pavilion which the Midway Surf Club worked so hard to build on our Midway beach.

I am sure the members of the Midway Club have the sympathy of every responsible citizen, and I would like to add my sincere congratulations to the members of this club for what they have done in completing this splendid amenity. Don't be discouraged by the childish irresponsibility of vandals. --Susan.

Bicycle Beater

Sir,--When one rides a bicycle over the Derby St bridge, one wonders if there is not some sort of collusion between the City Council and the Gisborne cycle dealers. The wear and tear caused by its "loose and irregular decking" must shorten the life of any bicycle ridden regularly over it. Surely it is time this dangerous bridge was replaced.--Shake And Shiver.

(We understand that this bridge is to be replaced as soon as possible.--Ed.)

What An Eyesore!

Sir,--So the Public Relations Officer is to have a nice new office down Grey Street opposite Waikanae Creek. I hope the inspiring view downstream will spark a movement to clean up this depressing eyesore of stinking mudflats which greets our visitors as they make their way to Waikanae Beach. The Council did good work on the upstream side of the Grey Street bridge. Why can't they do the same downstream? Or a weir near the railway bridge wouldn't cost much, and would transform this place into a lake for boating.--Clean It Up.
