Our Ship
With the commissioning of the Whitby class frigate on June 16 as the H.M.N.Z.S. Blackpool, Gisborne will have officially adopted the ship as a gesture of practical good-will.
The master of the vessel is Commander J. I. Quinn, a former Gisborne man.
As crew members of the Achilles, Able Seaman Joe Quinn and Cook Duncan McColl are shown on their return to Gisborne after action against the Graf Spee in December, 1939.

At a function held in Gisborne a mounted picture of the city was presented to the Minister of Defence, Mr Dean Eyre, to be sent on to the ship.
