N.Z. Surfriding Championships

A crowd of over 2,000 packed the natural grandstands at Wainui beach for the finals of the New Zealand Surf Riding Championships. Conditions were good although the surf was not up to the usual Gisborne standard due to the calming wind.

However, an excellent performance was turned on by Alan Byrne who won the Colin Davis Trophy for Junior Solo, the N.Z.S.R.A Trophy for Junior Paddle Board, the Outstanding Surfer Award Trophy for the best overall performance, and tied with Bob Davie, also of Gisborne, for the best performance in the senior or junior paddle board event. He was also a member of the Gisborne relay team which won their event.
