Pictures From The Past

This 83-year-old programme for a race meeting at Makaraka in 1882 makes very interesting reading. One of two cards owned by Mrs P. J. Campbell, 37 Centennial Crescent, it is surrounded by advertisements for Gisborne firms, none of which exist today.

The oldest surviving advertiser would be the British Empire hotel, whose "ad" includes the words "leading to the celebrated Whataupoko Block", obviously the latest in housing areas of the day.

Not quite as old as the race programme, this horse, Gay Boy, was an outstanding performer at district shows from 1936 to 1952. Owned by the late Mr Tom Mossman, of Wairoa, it died recently at the age of 35. Riding the horse in the picture is Mr Charlie Denton, Hexton.

Well-known Gisborne personality Miss Lena Ruru (left), now of Oswald Street, and Mrs Ida Sinclair (nee Buckingham), now of Greytown, pose for the camera in their modern hockey clothes at Te Karaka in 1928. The picture is from Mrs Sinclair's sister, Mrs M. Hindrup, 15 Karamu Street, who also played in the hockey team.
