Mr G. M. Newman, Kaiti, who has represented the Waikohu County on the Poverty Bay Catchment Board since its inception in 1945, retired from the board at its last meeting. The last foundation member still serving, Mr Newman has also been on the Soil Conservation Council for 20 years, and the Harbour Board for five years.

Three members of the 25th New Zealand Infantry Battalion who were all wounded by the same shell burst at Tabaga, Tunisia, on 22nd March, 1943, were re-united at the battalion's 25th jubilee in Wellington recently. They are, from left: Messrs Ralph Matthews (Hawkes Bay), Jack Frazer and Maurie Bickford (both of Gisborne). In the background are two other Gisborne men, Messrs Peter Murphy and Lindsay Margoliouth.
