Cook Anniversary

The 196th anniversary of Captain James Cook's landing at Kaiti Beach....the first landfall on New Zealand soil by a European.....on the 8th October, 1769, was attended by over 1000 school children, members of the public, and a contingent of R.N.Z.N. personnel, when it was staged in bright sunshine at the Cook Memorial.

Guest speaker at the ceremony was Lieutenant-Commander D. H. Davies, senior officer of the squadron of naval vessels Mako, Mararo, and Inverell, which visited Gisborne for the occasion.
