To Help Unmarried Mothers

A recent house-to-house collection by members of the Lions Club, Jaycees, and Salvation Army, to help raise funds for additional facilities for unmarried mothers at Edward Murphy Hospital, netted £1150. The campaign, which at the time of writing had netted £2200, has a target figure of £10,000, and will continue until Christmas with garden parties, gala days, and similar functions.

The rising rate of illegitimate births is becoming an alarming problem in New Zealand, and although many citizens feel it should be combated at its source, the effort of the hospital in providing refuge for the unfortunate victims is, without doubt, a charitable and praiseworthy one.

Last year the hospital catered for 40 such births, an increase of 12 over the previous year, and with the combined efforts of the Child Welfare department successfully adopted out all the children.
