Old And New

In the old picture at left, taken in Jas J. Niven's workshops about 50 years ago, the tumbler of a dredge engaged in early Gisborne harbour works can be seen. Last month, the workshops (now changed in name to Gisborne Engineering Co) had a similar tumbler in for maintenance, that of the Foremost Prince. Mr G. G. Hansard, manager of the company, is pictured with the tumbler below. As can be seen, they have changed very little in the past half-century.

N.B. A dredge tumbler is the device which drives the bucket chain. It is fitted at the top of the superstructure on the Foremost Prince.
