Captain of the 1965 Springboks, 24-year-old Dawie de Villiers, had a big smile for the "Photo News" colour camera when this picture was taken during the team's memorable four-day stay in Gisborne. A halfback, de Villiers did not play in Gisborne as he was still nursing an ankle injury received during the New South Wales game. When not playing rugby, de Villiers is a theological student at the Cape Town University.

Back Cover. Willie Weka, symbol of rugby in Gisborne and the East Coast, was created by the Public Relations Officer, Mr John Burland, for the Springboks' visit. An eight-foot-high model of Willie is pictured leading the parade through Gladstone Road on the morning of the match.
