Table Tennis Championships

An unseeded Auckland North Shore player, Ian Haynes, caused a major upset in the Poverty Bay Open Table Tennis Championships, held in the Y.M.C.A. stadium, when he defeated Gisborne's George Lowe in the final of the men s singles.

Haynes and Lowe, who was seeded 8 for the championships, eliminated all the top players in their uphill battle to the final.

In the ladies' final, Gisborne's Beverly Walker and Agnes Kennedy had a great tussle over five sets, with Mrs Walker coming out on top. Both players were also finalists last year.
