Perhaps the first tangible step in the construction of the controversial new William Pettie Bridge was undertaken earlier this month when Mr Mat Falkiner commenced test drilling on the site. Mr Falkiner is pictured displaying a sample of soft mudstone retrieved from the 100ft mark, In the background is the assistant driller, Paddy Ngarimu.

East Coast Rabbit Board inspector Ruri Peipi "displays a rare yellow possum, trapped by Fred Dahm at Wharekopai, near Matawai. Thought to be the first one of its kind trapped in their district, the yellow possum is considered very rare.

Gisborne duck shooters met with moderate success on the opening day of the 1965 season. Clear skies resulted in high flights, but most shooters at Lake Repongaere managed to bag a few. Here, Mr Alec Cameron watches his dog Pluto leave the boat to retrieve a duck.
