Disastrous Fire

A fierce fire which swept through a Kahutia Street bulk store, owned by Nicol's Transport Ltd, on a recent Tuesday night, caused damage estimated at up to £30,000.

Although the concrete and steel-girder building was not severely affected by the blaze, its contents were almost entirely destroyed or damaged.

The next morning, the store was a scene of chaos, as workmen toiled to clear the building of its charred contents, including 300,000 tin cans owned by Wattie Canneries.

Among other goods damaged by the fire were 27 bales of paper, valued at £600, owned by photo News.
