The Burton Final

A finish you wouldn't read about marked the final of the Burton Bowls Easter tournament. It was fought out between Harry Buckingham's Kahutia four and a formidable team from Whakatane skipped by G. Mercer. At the last end, Buckingham was five points down, but he and his men were equal to the occasion and more--they scored six and clinched the cup 21 to 20 amid great excitement.

"Buck" suffered a fall during the tourney and for several games the four was skipped by W. Horton, who deputised ably.

The winners appear below: From left, H. Buckingham, W. Horton, G. File and D. McQueen. The second picture shows the Whakatane team which came so close to victory. From left, G. Mercer, R. Learmond, J. Plamis and L. Smith.

George File had a Burton win in 1955 with Harry Martin's team, but for the other Kahutians it was a first.
