one of the three Hurcuies transport planes bought by the R.N.Z.A.F. showed its paces when it flew over Gisborne recently as part of a North Island town-to-town tour.
Lieutenant Leslie Merlon, second son of Mrs E. V. Ellis, Ormond Road, and the late Mr G. V. Merton, who is a first lieutenant with the coastal minesweeper H.M.N.Z.S. Hickleton, at present engaged in anti-infiltration patrols off the Malaysian coast.
Members of the Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club competed against Wairoa and other visiting canoeists in the first Waimata River race of the season. Winner of the seven-mile race was Barry Gooch, of Palmerston North, pictured arriving back at the boat shed under the Peel Street bridge are, from left: Barbara Waite (Wairoa), Jim Gardner (Wairoa), and Margaret Giddens (Gisborne).
