Roving Camera

Here's a sight never seen before, and never likely to be seen again. It is one of the Marine Department's special monofilament gill nets strung out along Grey Street, extending from near Childers Road into Awapuni Road. This was the type of net used in the recent fishing demonstrations at Tauranga and Gisborne. It was stacked neatly on the back of a truck, but (unknown to the driver) began unravelling itself as the truck travelled along Grey Street. In due course the driver became aware of what was happening (was his face red?), and then faced the long job of taking the net in again. A train which was due to use the crossing was held up while the job was done. (Pictures from Frank Wise jr.).

The wreckers are at it again, and this time it's the Jaycees, pulling the old British Empire hotel down as another method of raising funds for their good works around town. This was the scene on the first morning of the job. The site will see Gisborne's new public library being erected in due course.
